Passage: Revelation 2:12–17

Revelation 2:12-17

  • The sharp, two-edged sword is a symbolic reference that depicts the Word's power to expose and judge the innermost thoughts of our hearts as well as the Word of God's ability to separate believers from the world and to condemn the world and to condemn the world for its sin.
  • The believers in Pergamum stuck to their faith.
  • Some in Pergamum held to the teaching of Balaam.
  • Balaam's teaching was to basically do what felt good -- Pursue your lusts and reject God's statutes.
  • Some in Pergamum held to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.
  • The Nicolaitans were noted for compromising worldly morality with pagan doctrine which quickly spreads through churches.
